Before I opened my eyes this morning I laid still for a moment in the warm sun listening to Sam tell Mateo that it was kind of cool outside and enjoying the feeling of fresh breeze on my feet. For some reason in that moment I decided to vacuum the bed. The sun was, as it ever is, shining, but the air was in fact a little brisk. So much so that the dogs, typically dormant in the house, and sweltering under their thick coats, were dashing around in the yard biting one another. I made fresh orange juice.
In stripping and vacuuming the bed I found a little mold under some Masonite that I had put down to protect our mattress so I threw it out and washed the floor liberally with rubbing alcohol before sweeping out the bedroom and hitting the dishes. Just as I was finishing the dishes I heard a dripping noise and learned that the bucket we have in one of the luggage bays to catch the water (tanks are about third on our list of priorities) had flowed over into my tool bag. After laying my tools out to dry, changing out the compost toilet and spending a moment reclining outside on some salvaged garden furniture, Sam, who had been doing laundry, handed me a plate of buckwheat pancakes made with some duck eggs we found last Thursday. It was as I was putting syrup on my pancakes, or maybe as I was cutting up pancakes for one of the kids, that Sam asked what time it was. I replied that I didn’t know, then confessed that I didn’t even know what day it was. A few seconds later I learned that it was Monday and as I put the finishing touches to whomever’s pancakes I was messing with, smiled as I thought to myself how uncharacteristically perfect Monday’s have become.
The rest of the day was spent taking pictures to try and illustrate this beautiful moment, running errands with the kids, salvaging metal, buying diesel and reclining as much as possible in my salvaged garden furniture.
