Transit Antenna pulled into Carlsbad, New Mexico on the evening of May 30. We were in the midst of our hottest temperatures to date. Carlsbad was reporting temperatures between 105 and 110 degress, and it was not getting much cooler at night. We were staying at the local Walmart, when the on-duty security cop explained that Carlsbad Caverns averaged a temperature of about 54 degrees.
So needless to say we spent a full day exploring the caverns. Afterwards being unable to find any veggie oil, we headed north to Roswell hoping for a veggie spring and some cooler weather.
Enjoy the Carlsbad pics below.

The best thing about the caverns (besides the temperature inside) was the birds flying in and out of the natural entrance. The mile hike down into the caverns was not nearly as treacherous as the rangers made it seem. It may have a grade of 25 degrees at points, but all of the paths are asphalt with stainless steel hand rails. By the middle of the “big room” Dawn and I were sick of rock formations. I kept moving because I was so excited about the lunch room that was built in the fifties that resides inside the cavern, but it was quite a disappointment. I didn’t imagine anything too lofty- just hamburgers and fries with an old style soda fountain. But its actually more like a convenience store 800 feet below the ground -bags of chips, disposable cameras, and vacuum sealed microwavable hamburgers stacked in a nearly empty feezer. The tickets they give you are good for three days, but who would want to come back three days in a row?
